Romance, Fantasy or Thriller? Who Indie Authors Should Pitch in 2026—and Who to Skip

Genre-by-genre reviewer and literary outreach: women's fiction vs romance, romantasy, sci-fi, thriller, memoir-like literary fiction, and tailored emails.

One email cannot sell five different genres

Book blogs, book clubs and agencies organize their work around reader expectations. Calling a book 'for everyone' removes the one detail that makes an editor curious. Genre should be accurate first, searchable second. Before writing to anyone, identify whether you are offering an honest review, a written interview, an original essay or a rights discussion.

Women's fiction is not automatically genre romance

A contemporary novel about motherhood, marriage, career or relocation might fit women's fiction, reading-group fiction or contemporary literary fiction. A romantic relationship may be central, but genre romance generally expects the romantic arc to drive the narrative and lead to an emotionally satisfying relationship ending. Don't promise that unless the story delivers it. For Dreams Live Here, a better starting point is book clubs interested in family business, life abroad, marriage and self-reinvention—not 'spicy romance' influencers. Offer discussion prompts and an interview angle.

Romance and romantasy: tropes must be true

Reviewers need pairing, heat level, relationship arc, age category, standalone-versus-series and, where relevant, tropes such as second chance, friends-to-lovers or slow burn. Romantasy creators also need to know how much of the book focuses on the relationship versus the magical conflict. Content warnings should be accurate. A popular trope that isn't actually in the manuscript may win a click and lose trust.

Fantasy and science fiction: subgenre before broad labels

Epic fantasy, cozy fantasy, grimdark, romantasy, space opera, hard SF and near-future speculative fiction are not interchangeable. Offer an understandable world premise, standalone or series status, stakes and a short no-spoiler 'why this world is different' paragraph. A podcast about far-future space opera is not automatically the right home for quiet magical realism. Strange Horizons' editorial guidelines illustrate why fantasy and science-fiction criticism is specialized; read the rules before offering any book.

Mystery, thriller and horror: promise the correct kind of suspense

Distinguish cozy mystery, procedural, domestic suspense, psychological thriller, crime fiction and horror. Flag the level of violence or graphic content where useful. Tell a reviewer whether it is the start of a detective series and what readers can expect without revealing the killer or final twist. Don't market reflective family fiction as psychological suspense because it contains one frightening chapter.

Literary fiction and translated fiction: pitch a thought, not a blurb

For translated fiction, autofiction and cross-cultural writing, essays and interviews can be more relevant than mass ARC pitches. A useful proposal explores a specific craft question: what happens when someone close to you translates your narrator's memories? Necessary Fiction publishes author process essays and translation-related features, while Asymptote focuses on world literature and translation. Neither is a guarantee of coverage.

Agents are another audience entirely

For representation, use QueryTracker's genre search and verify each agent's live submission rules. A full-spoiler synopsis, manuscript word count, prior publication history and rights availability matter more than social-media reach. Never conceal self-publication. For more detail see where to submit a manuscript in 2026.

A five-question preflight

Is the genre description truthful? Has this person recently covered similar books? Is the author's format and publication status eligible? Are you asking for the kind of contribution they accept? Can they understand the audience fit in the first twenty seconds? If any answer is no, refine the target before writing. A simple reviewer-pitch structure is enough once the audience is correct.
